Nashville Launches “Beat the Heat Week” August 31–September 6

NASHVILLE, Ind. — Nashville residents are invited to take part in Beat the Heat Week, August 31–September 6, a community effort to help residents stay safe and comfortable during hot weather.

Nashville has been selected to participate in a year-long Indiana University-led project designed to help the community better understand how hot weather affects residents and explore simple ways to prepare for hotter days.

The message during Beat the Heat Week is simple: Stay cool. Drink water. Check on your neighbors.

Hot weather can be especially hard on older adults, young children, people who work outdoors and those who may have difficulty staying cool. Residents are encouraged to drink plenty of water, spend time in air-conditioned or cool spaces, wear light, loose clothing and avoid strenuous outdoor activity during the hottest part of the day.

Neighbors can help by checking on friends, family members or others who live alone. A quick call or visit can make sure someone has water, a working cooling system and is feeling well.

Residents are also encouraged to complete the 10-minute Nashville Heat Survey.

The survey asks what residents know about heat, how hot weather affects them and how the community can help. Nashville residents who participate can enter drawings for local gift cards from Chocolate Moose, Brown County IGA, and Offbeat Bakery.

Beat the Heat Week is about neighbors helping neighbors—and making Nashville a safer, healthier place for everyone.

 

April 1 to October 30, 2026
SR 46 Construction Project (Bloomington to Nashville)

Heads up, Brown County and surrounding areas — construction is scheduled to begin on or after April 1, 2026 along State Road 46 between Bloomington and Nashville.

This project, led by the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT), includes:

  • 4 Small Structure Replacements

  • 1 Bridge Deck Overlay

Work Locations:

SR 46 over Stephens Creek (Monroe County) – 3.0 miles east of SR 446
SR 46 over tributary to North Fork Salt Creek – 5.65 miles east of SR 446 (Monroe County)
SR 46 over tributary to North Fork Salt Creek – 6.9 miles east of SR 446 (Brown County)
SR 46 over tributary to Lower Schooner Creek – 10.86 miles east of SR 446 (Brown County)
SR 46 over tributary to Upper Schooner Creek – 11.59 miles east of SR 446 (Brown County)

What to Expect:

  • Traffic will be controlled by temporary signals through active work zones

  • Expect delays, especially during peak travel times

  • Use caution and watch for workers and equipment in the area

Project Duration:

April 1, 2026 – October 31, 2026

Why This Matters:

This stretch of roadway is heavily traveled by residents, commuters, and emergency services.
Please plan ahead, allow extra travel time, and stay alert — delays can impact emergency response as well.
Your patience helps keep everyone safe — including road crews and first responders.
